The Sixers just can't shake these Dion Waiters rumors.
--
Once again, the Sixers and Philadelphia native Dion Waiters
are linked together.
According to a report from Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio, the
Sixers are interested in acquiring the shooting guard from Cleveland.
The Cavaliers are actively trying to land Kevin Love to pair
with recently returned LeBron James, and a third team might be needed in order
to make the deal happen. According to the report, there are ‘league-wide
whispers’ that the Sixers could be that team, and that they have strong
interest in Waiters.
From Amico:
“There are league-wide whispers of a third team perhaps getting involved
in a potential Cavs-Wolves deal, whispers of the 76ers possessing a strong
interest in Cavs guard Dion Waiters, and whispers of another major transaction
on the way.”
This is not the first time that Waiters has been reported as
a potential target for the Sixers, as there was some buzz about a trade
that would ship Waiters to Philadelphia in exchange for Evan Turner.
That trade obviously never came to fruition, and the Sixers
reported interest in Waiters died down.
With the Cavaliers desperate to make a move to land Love,
and the Sixers possessing tons of cap space and looking to add assets, the
rumors have returned.
Waiters, not necessarily the most efficient or patient
player, doesn’t seem like he would be a smooth fit in the Sixers’ system, but
he could develop into an offensive option, and at only 22, he still has time to
grow and learn the league.
As has been the case consistently over the past couple
seasons, Thaddeus Young’s name has come up as
a potential piece in the trade talks.
Waiters has a team option for a little over $4 million after
the coming season, so if the Sixers do wind up with Waiters, they won’t be
saddled with him long-term if they are unhappy with his play or with his
attitude.
