The Sixers abundance of salary cap space is one of their
biggest assets this offseason, as it provides the franchise with financial
flexibility. The team has money to sign top-tier free agents, or to take on
unattractive expiring contracts from teams that are looking to clear cap space.
The Sixers are unlikely to sign a superstar this summer, so
acquiring expiring contracts that come off of the books next summer, when they
may be looking to be more active in free agency, makes some sense.
Enter: Jeremy Lin.
Lin is due close to $15 million from Houston this season,
and that money could be restricting to the Rockets, who are looking to land
someone Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James this offseason.

According to a report from SB Nation’s Liberty Ballers, the
Sixers and Rockets have engaged in trade talks that would send Lin to the
Sixers for the final year of his current contract. The report has not yet been
confirmed elsewhere.
If made, such a move would be low-risk for Philadelphia, as
they would only be obligated to Lin for a single season; one that is expected
to be a struggle anyway. Lin could serve as a back-up option to reigning Rookie
of the Year Michael Carter-Williams, and maybe even occasionally play off-ball
at the shooting guard spot.
If Lin, still only 25, excelled after a season in the
Sixers’ system, the team could consider bringing him back at a reasonable
price. If not, then the experiment would end with no future cost to the
organization.
Of central importance to the Sixers in such a scenario is
what else they would be getting in return from the Rockets for taking Lin’s
colossal salary off of their hands. You would have to think that Hinkie has his
eye on some future picks, as has been his MO since signing with the Sixers.
It will be interesting to see if he can get a deal done with
his former franchise.
